Standard Deck Tech – Green White Energy Cats – Part 2

Welcome back to the Standard Deck Tech for Green White Energy Cats here on the Daily Dose of Hour of Devastation! Yesterday, I talked about some cards we could potentially use in the deck, and which ones I thought would make the cut for what I wanted to build. Today I’m going to expand on that by breaking down quantities to make sure we have the right ratio and mana curve for what I’m looking to get out of this deck.

Here’s a reminder of what the Green White Energy Cats deck is looking like after the first cut of cards we had to choose from.

Green/White Energy Cats – Version 1

Creatures (10)
Longtusk Cub
Prowling Serpopard
Regal Caracal
Pride Sovereign
Adorned Pouncer
Servant of the Conduit
Greenbelt Rampager
Majestic Myriarch
Rhonas the Indomitable
Oketra the True

Spells (3)
Attune with Aether
Anointed Procession
Prepare // Fight

Planeswalkers (1)
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

Lands (18)
Aether Hub
Canopy Vista
Fortified Village
Forest
Plains

Sideboard (5)
Immolating Glare
Gideon’s Defeat
Dissenter’s Deliverance
Cast Out
Blossoming Defense

So, after the initial look of the cards that made the cut we have 14 different cards, and 39 card slots to fill to complete the deck. Let’s start with the spells and Planeswalkers first, and try to fill out those slots.

Since we’re only playing 21 Lands, and want Energy to help synergize the deck, it makes sense to have four Aether Hubs. Anointed Procession is great to have, even in multiples, so we’ll see how two of those work in the deck. Prepare // Fight will be our main way to destroy opponent’s creatures, so let’s start off with an initial three. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is obviously strong, but I don’t think I want to go with four of it in this deck. Let’s work with two and see if it’s a good fit.

Now that we have numbers for spells and Planeswalkers, let’s see what the deck looks like now.

Green/White Energy Cats – Version 2.0

Creatures (10)
Longtusk Cub
Prowling Serpopard
Regal Caracal
Pride Sovereign
Adorned Pouncer
Servant of the Conduit
Greenbelt Rampager
Majestic Myriarch
Rhonas the Indomitable
Oketra the True

Spells (9)
Attune with Aether
Anointed Procession
Prepare // Fight

Planeswalkers (2)
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

Lands (21)
Aether Hub
Canopy Vista
Fortified Village
Forest
Plains

Sideboard (5)
Immolating Glare
Gideon’s Defeat
Dissenter’s Deliverance
Cast Out
Blossoming Defense

With spells and Planeswalkers figured out, let’s move on to creatures. We have 28 card slots left and 10 different creatures to work with. First, I’m going to break down the creatures into casting cost so that I can make sure we get a good mana curve for the deck.

1-Mana

Greenbelt Rampager

2-Mana

Longtusk Cub
Adorned Pouncer
Servant of the Conduit

3-Mana

Prowling Serpopard
Pride Sovereign
Rhonas the Indomitable

4-Mana

Oketra the True

5-Mana

Regal Caracal
Majestic Myriarch

Ideally, I would want most of the creatures to be in the two to three mana range, with a lower number of creatures at one mana, and at four and above. Let me start with the higher mana cost creatures.

I think having more than one Oketra the True wouldn’t be good, so I’ll put that in with a single copy. Regal Caracal is something you want to draw, so I’ll put in two copies of that. Majestic Myriarch could work with one or two copies, so for now I’ll put it at two copies. When it comes to one-mana spells, I only currently have four Attune with Aethers, and it would be nice to have more turn one plays, so I want to have four Greenbelt Rampagers.

Now that leaves us with 19 card slots for the remaining six cards in the two to three mana slot. Longtusk Cub and Servant of the Conduit are ideal turn two plays, so we want to make sure we maximize our chances of getting those cards by putting four copies of each card in the deck. Rhonas the Indomitable is something we want to be getting slightly more often than Oketra the True, so let’s slot in two copies of that. Pride Sovereign is a key creature in the deck, as we want to start pumping out Cat creatures as soon as possible, so I’m going to put that at four copies. That leaves us with five copies for the remaining two cards. I’m leaning towards having more of the Adorned Pouncer as it can have a much greater impact in the mid-to-late game.

Now that we have numbers for our creatures, let’s see what the deck looks like:

Green/White Energy Cats – Version 3.0

Creatures (28)
Longtusk Cub
Prowling Serpopard
Regal Caracal
Pride Sovereign
Adorned Pouncer
Servant of the Conduit
Greenbelt Rampager
Majestic Myriarch
Rhonas, the Indomitable
Oketra, the True

Spells (9)
Attune with Aether
Anointed Procession
Prepare // Fight

Planeswalkers (2)
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar

Lands (21)
Aether Hub
Canopy Vista
Fortified Village
Forest
Plains

Sideboard (5)
Immolating Glare
Gideon’s Defeat
Dissenter’s Deliverance
Cast Out
Blossoming Defense

The last thing needed now is to finish off the sideboard and this deck will be complete. I think having three Blossoming Defense will be good to counteract removal heavy decks going after your threats. Also, I’ve added a copy of Heroic Intervention to deal with sweepers in the format. Three copies of Cast Out will be a key card to remove some Planeswalkers and artifacts that might run amuck. I’ve also decided to add two copies of Fumigate and one copy of Hour of Revelation to deal with large numbers of threats on the battlefield. Two copies of Gideon’s Defeat will help deal with Mardu Vehicle decks, or heaven forbid, other Cat decks! I’ll finish off the sideboard with a copy of Immolating Glare and two copies of Blessed Alliance to deal with certain decks.

Here’s the final version of the Green White Energy Cats deck!
