Next Level Shopping

Hello and welcome to this week’s special version of Next Level Analysis. Each week we take a deeper look into the latest decks and the cards performing best in them. Each week the goal is to pick up a new strategy or idea that can help you take your game to the next level either at your local card shop or at a large tournament.

Last week I asked to community to vote once again on the deck that they would prefer me to write about and the results were inconclusive. So, this week I have decided to bring you a special edition of Next Level Analysis. This week we will be preparing for the holidays and what the perfect gift would be for that family member or friend who enjoys sitting down to a nice cup of hot coco and a game of Magic the Gathering. Many players can be hard to buy for since when we need a card we typically either buy or trade for it at the time. With this in mind, I will exclude singles from the list of possible gifts.

No matter what format you or your friends play most everyone uses sleeves. These sleeves are not meant to last forever so the holidays are a great time to find sales and deals on gaming supplies such as sleeves for the upcoming year. The two varieties I would personally recommend are KMC and Dragon Shield. Each one has its own perks but both hold up very well through many games. For players who enjoy a good game of Commander I would recommend the Dragon Shield sleeves since they come in packs of 100. As a player myself, I would be happy to unwrap some new sleeves to put aside so that the next time I think about re-sleeveing my deck I do not need to purchase them.

Keeping on the same topic many players accumulate many deck boxes as they continue to enjoy the game. This also can be a great accessory you can pick up for that player that seems to have everything already. I would recommend a company called DEX Protection for a unique gift that not everyone has seen yet. This company makes gaming supplies such as deck boxes and binders and the quality is great. They also offer some unique options such as python skin deck boxes. For the animal lovers out there, no need to worry it’s a synthetic material so no pythons were hurt in the making of this product. If you would like to check out some of the great products they offer you can find them on us.wizardtower.com and also dexprotection.com. With many options available you should be able to find just what the Frontline Medic ordered.

Along with gaming accessories, there are many great card and board games that many players would enjoy receiving as a gift this year. For the diehard magic fan, you have the option of the Magic the Gathering Board game itself. This game was released from Hasbro has a suggested retail price of $29.99 USD. You can play as your favourite Planesewalker and take on others in this strategic battlefield miniature game. There are many other great games such as Munchkin, Legendary, Smash Up and Settlers of Catan to choose from. Any of these games would make a great gift and will provide many hours of fun as you learn and explore all the exciting gameplay and interaction with the games and each other.

If you are buying a gift for your significant other who enjoys playing Magic the Gathering I would recommend a personalized playmat for them. Websites such as, http://www.inkedgaming.com/ can take that perfect photo memory and turn it into a playmat of you and your honey. Nothing says I love you like playing Tarmogoyf on your girlfriend’s face. These playmats typically cost $24.99 USD but around the holidays there are several promotions offered. I know personally I would love to receive a gift that had this much thought put into it. However, I probably would not play on I and just keep it in a Playmat tube or on display to keep it “near mint”.

Another option is the new colour commander decks that are set to release on November 11th, 2016. These decks feature new cards and mechanics such as Partner and should be a blast to play with. These are perfect for the player who plays nothing but Commander or for someone just getting into the format.

Wizard’s Tower has these decks in stock staring at $35.99 and make the perfect gift. Along with the new commander decks many sealed products make great gifts such as booster packs and booster boxes. A player may have all the cards they need but there is something about the feeling of ripping into a booster pack to see what you are going to get.

Thank you for taking the time to read my article and all of the other great ones that can be found on MTG Canada. Until next time, best of luck in taking your game and shopping to the next level. I also would love to hear feedback from you on this or any of my other articles. This feedback can be sent to crossear@gmail.com.

Also, if you have any decks you would like to see me alter or put some thought into feel free to send the deck list or link to me and I will make sure to get back to you.
